5 Things Most Moms Forget to Prep for Postpartum
Hello my dear friend,
It’s so easy to get caught up in the fun parts of baby prep—decorating the nursery, folding those itty bitty onesies, researching the best stroller, and making sure the diaper stash is full.
But in all the excitement, we often forget about preparing ourselves—our hearts, homes, and marriages—for the season that comes after birth.
Let’s talk about 5 things most moms forget to prep for postpartum… and how you can walk into this season with peace and purpose.
Because that is what we all want, to give our baby the best start in life possible, and that means preparing ourselves, our homes, and our hearts to endure the challenges ahead.
1. Preparing Your Marriage & Household
Postpartum doesn’t just impact you—it affects your whole family. Your marriage, your household routines, and even the little daily rhythms you’ve built together will feel different.
It’s so important to talk with your spouse ahead of time about what life may look like after baby arrives. Who will handle meals? Who takes nighttime shifts? How can you protect time together as a couple, even in small ways?
I have a whole blog post about preparing your marriage before having a baby. It even has some worksheets for you to do with your husband together.
2. Support System (Asking for Help Before You’re Drowning)
Here’s the truth: no one can do it all—and you’re not supposed to. Yet so many moms forget to plan for support. Meals, laundry, dishes, and yes—even baby snuggles while you nap—are things you’ll need help with.
I remember thinking, I’ve got this, I can handle everything. But guess what? The dishes didn’t care that I was healing, and the laundry didn’t care that I was exhausted.
My husband only got a few days off work as we needed the money as a newly married, so there I was, alone... overwhelmed... helpless.
That’s why it’s powerful to intentionally set up a support system before you give birth. Ask for help BEFORE you need help.
In Blessed Beginnings, our postpartum prep course, we walk you through how to build a realistic postpartum plan that includes community and help so you don’t feel like you’re drowning when the reality hits. Have you heard it takes a village to raise a child? We teach you to create that village.
3. Nourishing Foods & Meal Prep
Pregnancy cravings get all the attention, but what about postpartum healing foods? Your body needs serious nourishment as it recovers from birth, and quick snacks or freezer meals can be lifesavers when you’re too tired to think about cooking.
Simple things like making a batch of freezer-friendly soups, prepping protein-packed snacks, and stocking up on easy-to-grab nutrition make a huge difference.
That’s why our course includes meal prep checklists and recovery-focused food ideas—because healing starts from the inside out.

4. Emotional & Mental Health Prep
The postpartum season can be a rollercoaster of emotions. From baby blues and overwhelm to identity shifts and mental health struggles, it’s a tender time for every mom.
But here’s the encouragement: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
You are not alone, and God is near—even in your hardest moments.
It makes a HUGE difference which head space you are in prior to birth. As a doula, exhausted, stressed, and anxious moms have harder labors and recoveries. When you relax, give your head freedom to think clearly, and focus on the positive birth and postpartum outcomes are always so much better.
Imagine rephrasing “man I am SO exhausted because baby won’t sleep in their crib” to “I deserve to sit and be nap trapped, my baby needs me and these times will soon pass”.
You don’t learn thinking like that during hard times, but during the easy times. So start during pregnancy, your postpartum self will thank you!
5. Preparing Spiritually, Not Just Practically
Postpartum isn’t just a physical experience—it’s spiritual too. You’ll face weariness, doubts, and even moments of spiritual warfare. That’s why it’s so powerful to prepare your heart with Scripture, prayer routines, and biblical affirmations that anchor you in truth.

In Blessed Beginnings, you’ll find guided verses, devotions, and encouragement designed to help you stay rooted in Christ as you step into this new chapter. The entire course is biblical-based and rooted in scripture.
Preparing yourself spiritually helps you shine up that armor of God, sharpen your sword, and prepare to battle the evil that will try to rob you of your newborn bubble bliss.
Conclusion
You don’t have to just wing it in postpartum. You can step into this season prepared in heart, home, and faith.
Preparing yourself will never be something you regret, but NOT preparing will be something you will ALWAYS regret.
That’s why I created Blessed Beginnings: A Christian Postpartum Prep Course. It’s for moms who want to not only survive postpartum, but thrive in it—with Christ at the center. [Learn more here → insert link]
